A diuretic increases the flow of urine and is used to treat conditions where water is retained in the body (including pre-menstrual fluid retention). Edema is swelling of the body tissues caused by fluid retention and may be generalized over the whole body or affect only local areas - usually the ankles or belly. The following may be a few causes of edema:
- sluggish circulation due to heart inefficiency
- blockages of veins
- damage to capillary blood vessels (bruising or scalding)
- fluid not being efficiently excreted by the kidneys
- too much salt retained in the body.
- malnutrition
It is advisable to eliminate salt from the diet, reduce weight, exercise and follow a 'whole food' diet - eat plenty of fresh vegetables, salads and fruit. Cut out junk, refined and processed foods.
Instructions: Massage into affected area morning and evening or as needed.
